Hey there guys-

Today we are going to be talking about food, and basically is because I consider this to be a very important subject. Whether you are really focusing on trying to learn Spanish or you are just grabbing a few words because you are planning a trip to a Spanish-speaking country, you need to know about what people are going to serve on your plate and you are going to be putting into your mouth. Can you agree?

So, let's get started:

We are going to start with a very basic list, these are the things that you probably eat on a regular basis. We are not going to go right away with exotic dishes.

1. Pasta:
This is an easy one because being an Italian word, you use the exact same word for Spanish and with a similar pronunciation. For a better pronunciation you should check out my vowels post, this will help you a lot with the sounds. So yes, pasta in Spanish is pasta.

Examples:
¿Por favor, me puedes traer una pasta con salsa de tomate? | Can you please bring me a pasta with tomato sauce?
Que deliciosa esta pasta con mucho queso parmesano | This pasta with a lot of parmesan cheese is trully delicious

2. Bread:
This is also an easy one because the Spanish word for bread is very short and easy to pronounce. The word we use for bread is pan. Yes, simple as P-A-N. You need to pronounce it just the way you pronounce Peter Pan.

Examples:
Ponle mantequilla al pan cuando está caliente | Spread some butter on your bread while it is still hot
Me encanta desayunar con pan por las mañanas | I love to have bread for breakfast every morning

*Extra: if you want to ask for a loaf of bread, you ask for a "rodaja de pan".

3. Rice:
The Spanish word for rice is arroz. You need to practice this one because it has a double "r" and you know that us Latins like to really pronounce that consonant repetition. There is also a "z" at the end... So make sure you go extra Spanish for this one.

Examples:
Que rico el arroz con camarones | How delicious is this rice with shrimps
Me gusta más comer arroz que pasta | I prefer to eat rice than pasta

4. Eggs:
The Spanish word for eggs is huevos. The "h" has no sound here, so when you pronounce it you can take this into consideration. "U-E-VOS"

Examples:
Me gustan los huevos revueltos | I like scrambled eggs
Yo prefiero huevo frito con pan tostado | I prefer fried eggs with toasted bread

5. Potato:
This one is also a very easy word because the Spanish word is very similar. The translation for potato is "patata". All you have to do is change all the vowels in the word for several a's.

Examples:
Me gustan mucho las patatas al horno con salsa | I like baked potatoes with sauce
Quiero comer patatas fritas con pescado | I would love to eat french fries with fish

6. Chicken:
Ok, this word might be a little more complicated because the Spanish word is not similar at all. But don't worry, the translation is so short that you won't have any trouble remembering it! The word you need to use to ask for chicken is "pollo".

Examples:
Los domingos comemos pollo frito | On Sundays we eat fried chicken
Me gusta más el pollo que la carne | I prefer chicken a lot more than meat

7. Meat:
The Spanish word for meat is "carne". This is a short and easy word to pronounce, so you will not have trouble asking for a delicious steak.

Examples:
Quiero comer carne con patatas fritas | I would like to eat meat with French fries
Me gusta mi carne casi cruda | I like my meat uncooked

8. Fish:
This is a "tough" one because these two words are not similar. In fact, fish is really short and the Spanish word is quite a bit longer. If you want to enjoy this wonder from the sea you must ask for "pescado".

Examples:
No me gusta comer pescado, prefiero otras cosas | I don't like to eat fish, I prefer other things
Pescado al horno con camarones, un plato exquisito | Baked fish with shrimps, a delicious dish
